Thursday (July 21, 2016) was Law Enforcement Appreciation Day in the Woodcreek subdivision. Local officers enjoyed breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  Numerous vendors, including Moe’s, Marco’s Pizza and Bojangles supplied food, and residents put together goodie bags for officers’ vehicles.

Officers from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, Lexington Police, and South Carolina Highway Patrol were there. They say during these tough times for law enforcement across the country, it’s great to know they can count on the local community.

“I’m a father, I have two children. I’ve been married for 17 years. Every time there’s an officer that’s killed in the line of duty, it hits home. That could be me, that could be one of the officers I work with, so it’s heavy. Fortunately in the town of Lexington, we see that support every day,” said Lexington Police Cpl. Cameron Mortenson.

Neighbors say in their recognition of the sacrifice officers make every day, this was the least they could do.

“I think with everything going on we realize, they’re human…they can make mistakes, but also at the same time they put their lives on the line every day. They risk their lives to protect us and take care of us. They’re the first ones we’re going to call when we need something. We just want them to know how much they’re appreciated and how much they’re loved, and how much we thank them for putting their lives on the line for us every day,” said Hazel Livingston, a neighborhood resident and one of the organizers of Thursday’s event.

Blue bows were tied on all the mailboxes in the neighborhood.
